The Face You Make When the Wi-Fi Goes Out

She dimmed the lights and locked the door,
Had “research” waiting—tabs galore.
The mood was right, her schedule free,
Tonight she’d reach serenity.

She clicked her favorite guilty site,
Then—buffering—the spinning wheel of spite!
The router blinked, then lost its glow,
And whispered softly, “Not tonight, though.”

She shook the box and checked each wire,
Desire replaced by tech-support ire.
One urgent need, one cruel delay—
The Wi-Fi chose to go down before she could.

Now here she stands, denied release,
Restarting modems, seeking peace.
The woman’s rage, both fierce and true:
“Damn you, Cox—and your outage too!”

Desert Beautiful

Beauty here does not arrive gently.
It comes shimmering off asphalt,
wrapped in one hundred degrees,
wearing sunlight like a crown.

The Tucson desert asks no permission.
It burns the softness from the day
until only honest things remain—
stone, thorn, dust, and endurance.

Saguaros stand like old witnesses,
arms raised toward an empty blue,
holding stories in their ribs
and rain beneath their skin.

Even the mountains keep their distance,
purple and silent beyond the heat,
as if beauty were something sacred
best admired without touching.

Then evening loosens the sun’s grip.
The sky becomes orange, rose, and fire,
and for a few breathless minutes
the whole desert forgives us.

Here, beauty is not delicate.
It survives thirst.
It carries scars.
It blooms when no one is watching.

Perhaps that is what Tucson teaches:
what looks unforgiving
may simply be asking us
to see more deeply.
